The Moab Folk Festival is back this year for a two-day outdoor music festival starting Saturday, November 6. Seven-time Grammy Award-nominated Patty Griffin will headline the festival and take the stage on Saturday at 3 p.m.
“We are really excited about this year’s lineup,” said Cassie Paup, director of the Friends of the Moab Folk Festival, the non-profit organization that sponsors the festival each year. The nonprofit also creates a series of free concerts each summer and raises awareness with schools across Grand County.
This year’s lineup includes eight groups; four will play each day with concerts at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Saturday’s lineup includes RO Shapiro, John Craigie, May Erlewine and headliner Patty Griffin. Griffin had been on Paup’s wishlist for some time. The artist is best known for her song “Heavenly Day”, released in 2007. Her debut album, “Living With Ghosts”, dates from 1996. Her 2011 album “Downtown Church” debuted at No. of Billboard’s Folk and Christian Albums charts, and won the 2011 GRAMMY Award for “Best Traditional Gospel Album.”
May Erlewine is the Audience Choice Returning Artist as of 2019, which means Audiences of 2019 have voted for her return. Erlewine will also participate in some of the workshops and outreach activities organized by the Friends of the Moab Folk Festival, Paup said.
John Craigie has also been on Paup’s list for years. She described him as a young, humorous singer-songwriter. His most popular songs feature humorous lyrics that sometimes sound more like stories than traditional folk songs.
RO Shapiro is also new and upcoming, said Paup, and has a “buttery and delicious voice,” which is particularly evident in his most popular song, “St. Joan,” which is part of his most recent. album, “King Electric Sessions”, which was released this year.
Sunday’s lineup includes The Proper Way, Lindsay Lou, Chatham County Line and The Lil Smokies.
“We decided we wanted to have a dance group for our headliner for Sunday, so we looked at The Lil Smokies,” Paup said. “I think they’re going to get people to have a big dance party.” The Lil Smokies are a bluegrass group formed in Missoula, Montana. The group is currently on tour in California, Utah, Colorado and Montana.
“We have been hearing attendees and performers singing the praises of this particular festival for many moons,” The Lil Smokies frontman Andy Dunnigan said in a statement to the Moab Sun News. “Being included in a training that really puts the pencil on the pedestal is very exciting for this group. So many great writers on this lineup. Mastodons. Hero. [We’re] delighted to play, listen and learn in such a beautiful place.
Chatham County Line is a well-known American band from North Carolina that has performed for 20 years. Their most popular song, “Crop Comes In”, was released in 2010.
Lindsay Lou is a household name around Moab – she and her band performed during the Friends of the Moab Folk Festival free concert series last summer. She will also be performing a few songs with The Lil Smokies and May Erlewine, said Paup, “So we are looking forward to a good collaboration with an old-fashioned festival and a jam on stage.”
The Proper Way is a band from Ogden, Utah. The festival always tries to feature a band from Utah, Paup said. The group’s most recent release is their 2021 EP, “It’s All In Your Head,” which features five songs.
“Just about everything” is new this year, said Paup. The festival takes place outdoors, at Center Street Ballparks, and there is a fourth performer each day. What Paup is most excited about, however, is the free lineup that the Friends of the Moab Folk Festival offers alongside the two-day music festival.
“Our mission is not only to bring this music to our community in the form of a festival, but also to provide affordable and accessible entertainment to people in the city who may not be able to afford one. ticket, ”said Paup.
On Friday, November 5, there will be a 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. jam session at the Backyard Theater (56 W 100 South, Moab). Everyone is invited to come, with or without an instrument, to participate. On the night of November 6, 6 to 8 p.m., Lindsay Lou and The Lil Smokies will perform unplugged sets at the Backyard Theater.

To complement the free programming, each morning from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. there will be a bluegrass jam at Sun Court at Center Street Gym (203 E Center St.).
“[The workshops] really increase access, ”said Paup. “It just brings artistic performance to our underserved community. Many people live too far from a place, or are too busy to attend events, or perhaps cannot afford a ticket. I just think it really makes sense.
Paup expects more than 1,000 people to attend the festival, she said.
“Our aim is not so much to develop the festival, but simply to keep the quality high,” said Paup. “And as far as our organization is concerned, continuing to provide so much free and accessible content not only to the community but to schools.”
The festival will also be broadcast live on KZMU radio on 90.1 and 106.7 FM.
Tickets for the festival can be purchased at www.moabfolkfestival.com; $ 50 for a one-day general admission or $ 90 for a 2-day general admission. Children aged 11 to 15 get a 20% discount on tickets, and children 10 and under are free if accompanied by an adult.
Moab residents can purchase tickets for 10% off in person at Back of Beyond Books and the Canyonlands Copy Center.
