The three-day folk festival returns to West Northumberland this autumn

A live music festival returns to Northumberland this autumn, featuring folk music from around the world.

The Allen Valleys Folk Festival (AVFF) is an in-person event again this year after being online for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic. The festival was established in 2014 and has returned to celebrate not only traditional folk music, but also dancing – and of course the highlight of the event, the burning of a wooden sculpture of the legendary Allendale Wolf in the town market square.

The festival, which is surrounded by the stunning scenery of the North Pennines AONB, is one of the highlights of the North East’s music calendar, aiming to bring together prominent and up-and-coming names from a genre that is growing in popularity. This year’s lineup includes award-winning folk duo The Rheingans Sisters on Saturday and Scottish folk band Talisk, which will close the festival on Sunday afternoon.

Now in its ninth year, festival chairman Peter Aldcroft said, “This year’s lineup is very engaging with a mix of genres from traditional folk to world music. Headliners on Saturday include Tiwiza, a band steeped in African tradition but with a modern and driving rock spirit and Balkan Hot Club, whose pulsating style has won over festival-goers across the UK.

From September 23-25, acts will appear at various venues in the town of Allendale, primarily at the Festival Hall and St Cuthbert’s Church. The festival will include side events taking place around the city as well as workshops, to be announced next month.
